Frequently Asked Questions

TRUE and UL 2799 certification frameworks are administered by different certification bodies, GBCI and UL respectively. Furthermore, these frameworks have a different scope. UL2799 focuses on the measurement and verification of the effective diversion rate of the facility. TRUE has a broader scope of work covering the business practices and management beyond the simple handling of discards from the facility.

Most of frameworks require at least 12 months of historical waste data. From there, based on our experience, it takes about 3 to 6 months to get the certification.

Yes. TRUE Zero Waste has a “pre-certification” framework that recognizes companies that have started their journey towards Zero Waste but not yet achieved 90% diversion. UL2799 can issue a certificate to validate the current diversion rate (even if it is lower than 90%).

No. The certificate is issued by the certification body administrating the scheme (such as GBCI or UL). Zero Waste City is a facilitator to help facilities achieve the certification.
